Absolutely true, but my degree is in music. You don't necessarily need an IT degree, but you DO need to be able to sling the code. I remember when I applied for my first programming position at an engineering firm, the interviewer was so excited that I had my BME. You should have seen his face after I explained that my BME was a Bachelor's of Music Education and NOT a Bachelor's of Mechanical Engineering!
that's not true, government workers can easily get fire. I've been working for the government for 10 years, and so many people have gotten fire for small things. they do get warning before getting fired, but I have seen people getting fired for coming in late, getting too many warning, doing your job incorrectly, stealing, by not following work policy, taking too many sick days within the year, they usually get many warnings before getting fired,so it's not like one mistake and your fired which I think is a good idea, as everybody makes mistakes and plus hiring new people is hard, as it takes five weeks to train the person, they have to do a lot of paperwork, background check, fingerprints, interviews, going over applications and etc.. So it's a lot easier to just give them a warning and make sure they don't do it again, unless it's a serious thing they have done. people cannot sue if they are fired, I don't know where you get that information, throughout the years I have seen over 50 people get fired and no one has ever sued. You can only sue for age discrimination, and that's if they hire somebody younger than you after you're fired. So if you're 60 years old and you're fired and than the higher a30-year-old than you can sue.
I also think America should make it harder for companies to outsource their job, maybe give companies more tax breaks for hiring Americans, somehow try to discourage outsourcing, but that can also cause problems as some companies can't afford to pay higher wage to Americans. I remember 10 years ago programmers use to make $100,000 a year, they started outsourcing now programmers make 40,000 year
You think people can only sue for age discrimination? Hell, I could sue you for ANYTHING! Lawsuits concerning race discrimination are usually settled out of court with the employers paying some negotiated settlement just to stay out of the news. My brother-in-law is team lead for Social Services. Anytime one of his team is slacking, he must create some kind of "Improvement Plan" and monitor the situation for 3 months. At the end of 3 month the slacker gets an evaluation. If there is no improvement, only then does any type of warning occur with ANOTHER "Improvement Plan". It really takes 9 months to fire a slacker. In order to fire a minority, EVERYTHING must be documented and Social Services will still get sued, only to settle to avoid the bad publicity. Just because it doesn't happen where you work doesn't mean that it doesn't happen.
Education is a good thing. Degrees open doors. Education exposes you to new strategies and technologies. Otherwise you just write using the skills that you have. Languages evolve exposing new methods and objects which make your job easier. That is what your education should be teaching you. Yes, you can learn on your own, but having someone to teach you is great! No reason to discount the value of an education. I would never presume to know "all that I need to know".
people can sue for anything, but it doesn't mean they can win. Plus I'm talking about government job, not private
Duh! They don't have to be able to win. Did you even read the post? The state settles out of court to avoid the bad publicity. "Lawsuits concerning race discrimination are usually settled out of court with the employers paying some negotiated settlement just to stay out of the news." Where did you get the idea that Social Services is Private, anyway?
Other countries economy are doing way badly then US..Countries like UK, GE, and specially like India where they stock market taking a big hits, people doing way worse than before..Does that matter to you.
I wasn't talking about social services, where I'm at people easily get fired. maybe California is different than other states, but in California there is a law that says you can fire anybody for any reason.
Then why did you say this? Social Services IS government. ============================================== Point taken. We both assume that our scenarios cover the entire nation. So I can really only speak for Kansas and Missouri.
Education is good. But in the US, it's super wasteful. US colleges are full of unqualified students and slackers. The thousands of colleges that are non competitive and the majority of the students are on financial aid to the tune of 35k per year. The said fact is that most don't even graduate. In Europe there is a lot more focus. If you don't come out of high school knowing something, you are getting into college. MBA's and C# programmers are making 100k+ Outsourcing does cost some jobs but it also helps to keep America competitive. I really believe that the #1 issue facing companies is healthcare especially in manufacturing. The US needs to double the amount of general practitioners and primary care.
