Well, there are many solutions out there.

It all depends on your budget.

The solutions vary from free usage of RBL lists to a mail relay server with antispam software.

How many mailboxes do you handle on this server?

A very simple trick, if you dont have many mailboxes, is to use google apps.
They offer mail hosting services for your domain.
Google Apps offer IMAP/Pop3/Webmail access which is nice. On top of that, they block spam by default.

There are drawbacks for this, such as limited amount of accounts etc..

Again, its hard to come up with a solution if you dont know the full picture.

I don't know if it is that intelligent to outsource a company mailserver to google. They have the ressources sure, but they are getting more and more powerful.

for a small office that is not into r&d its not that bad.
depends on how paranoid you are.
after all, sensitive information should not be sent on smtp / pop3 in the first place.

can you confirm ssl encryption all they way?
    we are not there yet.

    what about mail address spoofing?
signing every outgoing mail is not that cheap or easy to support.

do you send links to customers? getting them used to it might set the ground to phishing attacks.

can you make sure that one of your employees will not send that special report to a 3rd party by accident?

    mail security is big.
most organizations spend a lot of money on it.
