If you have your own business (like a shop or something) you dont even need to know what is PHP.
If you have your own business is about web, than PHP may be helpful.

PHP is a server side language, you can use it to create things like blogs, forums and custom stuff. Takes a while to learn but it's great once you learn it.

Yes, PHP could be helpful for your shopping cart scripts and to get values from a MySQL database.

You can find some scripts to help you out at places like HotScripts.. Just Google it..

You may need some CGI to for your shopping bin script!

PHP is a server-side programming language used in the generation of dynamic pages. Virtually everything online these days is dynamically generated, for example this very forum. Essentially a dynamic page means the data/information is stored somewhere like a database, and the page is built dynamically to contain that data/information.

So, let's say you're selling a product online and your site is a shop. You'd have a database of products, and for each of those products you would want there to be a page. If each time you added a new product you had to make a brand new page, you'd be there forever. What a server-side programming language such as PHP can do, is to fill the page dynamically with the correct product data/information when a customer requests it. To the customer the page will look like a completely different page to another product's page, but to the server it is the same page filled with different content dynamically.

PHP and other languages are much more than that of course, but I hope that's given you a general idea.

Basically, when you hire a developer for your business site you're going to want to look for PHP or other server-side language skills (such as ASP). PHP is pretty much the industry standard.

I would say it can be very helpful in making web-based reports and things like that. You can use PHP to manipulate data and make it visible to everyone involved in your business no matter way they are via the web.

You can also use PHP to create a more user-friendly website (if applicable) and even check your SERPs.

PHP is powerful for those who know how to use it... kind of like excel :)

PHP is a language to make a website so if you're going to make a website for your shop then yes it can help you.

But will PHP be the best language for your website? That depends on what you need.

PHP is a server side scripting language as said before. It is widely used for doing calculation, handling of databases, etc...

However if you need to have a nice looking website, then you will have to learn HTML & JavaScript, CSS, Graphic Designing with Photoshop, etc...

For example, if you need to create a shopping cart, you will have to list down your products in an attractive way. You can use php with above tools to get the total price, add discounts and finally process the transaction through a payments gateway, etc...

You may also start with a pre-build free php based solution and edit the code to suit your need. (For example, Zen cart is a free php based shopping cart, phpBB is a free php based forum, Joomla is a free php based Content Management System, WordPress is a free php based blog, there are lots...).
