    You need to do a lot of on page as well as off page optimization to attain one of the top rankings. Target some keywords that have enough number of searches but don't have too much competition. Build quality links. Add fresh content to your website regularly.

    It depends on your target keywords. If it's not too competitive, you'll get a better chance of getting a good ranking. If it's the other way around, you need to build more quality links for it through forum posting, link exchange, blog commenting, etc.

    It takes work, time, and a lot of patience to get to the first page of Google for competitive keywords. typically, you would have to wait a year before your site will start to list for competitive keywords. If you choose to target lower competition terms, then you have a better chance of showing up when your site is brand new. If you want to try and get on top for the hard key terms right away, then your only real option is to spend money on Adwords.
