If you have good content / information - try writing in to them for a link listing

.edu links hold no more inherent weight than any other properly placed link. Its a moot point.

There are do follow .edu and .gov websites out there where you can do blog commenting.. Just make sure that you contribute a meaningful and related comment to the post.. Here's a .edu blog finder that you might find useful.. http://seopositions.net/edu-blog-finder.html.. :)

I'm doubtful whether edu/gov links are worth the time and effort needed to obtain them.

They are difficult to find, involve registering accounts, minimum posts etc etc, your posts will often be deleted or have links removed and so many other issues.

Weigh this up against the potential benefits those links and the links you could get from normal sources with the same time and effort.

Actually Matt Cutts mentioned in passing once that *.edu sites usually have a higher PR than most other types of sites. He then went on to say that Google didn't score them any higher because of the TLD and didn't count them as trusted like a w3.org site or one like that.

I'd have to dig for the reference.

Probably you can buy links from .gov site. just check in link sale section. you will see some sellers selling .gov links. But i suppose that must be costly.

I've written an article about the benefits of .Edu and .Gov links and the way to find such blogs with ease using Google itself. Quite informative i'd say.
You'll can check it out here : Acquiring .Gov and .Edu Backlinks

What you need to do is learn how to solid link building, content writing, and link baiting. Looking for the magic pill in .edu and .gov is similar to taking diet pills, they might work some but there are much better ways to get the job done.

It may be spam if your blog topic is not same with the site from where you want to get link.

Most of the edu and gov website won't link out easlily, and the chance is really slim if u are commercial site.

But if u can provide valuable content for them, or things can benefit them a lot, u can try contact them i guess.
