Hey all, first time poster/long time lurker here. My question is: After I've run a site-wide find/replace in Dreamweaver MX and all the results have popped up in the results box at the bottom, is there a way to select them all and upload them? Or maybe just upload all open files? It's been a pain in the ass to manually select each result, open it, upload it, close it, and repeat like 50 times for each link. AHH! I've tried searching but can't figure out the right words to use and "how to upload" is too common of a question to be able to ask "how to upload all find replace results". I've been doing SEO lately and changing my URLs and links to be more friendly, but converting over 6,000 URLs is going to take FOREVER if this isn't possible. The answer or any good ideas for possible work-arounds are greatly, greatly appreciated! Evan Bryant www.intouchtoday.com
Hi Evan, Welcome to DP! If I understand you correctly you want to upload all the files that you have replaced the links on site wide. I personally have not done a site wide find and replace I do them one file at a time. But I do know that if you have your remote and local site information setup you can easily upload all the files at easily from Dreamweaver. Is this the information you are looking for? If so I can help you set that up. Good luck with your project. Let me know if I can lend a helping hand. Denise
Haha, I do think you understand me correctly, busygal. But, I don't want to upload the entire site at once because I've got so many random PSD's and PDF's and unused files and images saved in the local folder that if I uploaded the whole site it'd eat up my server space. Maybe you're right. Maybe the problem is that I just don't have my local site files organized well enough and the solution was always meant to be upload the entire site. You know how if you do a find/replace on a page if you double click on one of the results it will highlight it and take you to it in the code? Well, if you do a site-wide find/replace and then double click on one of the results it will first open that file and then highlight that code for you. So, yesterday I did a site-wide find/replace for http:// intouchtoday .com (my site) and replaced it with http:// WWW. intouchtoday .com. It came up with over 7,000 results on 1,100-something pages. I opened and uploaded each one at a time. It was annoying. That's why I'm trying to figure this out. I really appreciate your suggestion, busygal. If nobody else has a better idea or knows the actual way to do what I'm talking about then I will end up doing what you suggested: cleaning out my local folder well enough to be able to just upload the entire site instead. Thanks.
Hi there- I am new to web design also, and I recently came across the same problem. I'm surprised more people haven't had the same trouble! The solution that I found is pretty simple, but it took some searching before I came across it. Dreamweaver gives you the capability to select files based on when they were modified. So, let's say you do a find and replace and come up with 300 instances of the changed information. Instead of having to go through the files panel to open and upload each file separately, you can use the "select recently modified" command in the files contextual menu. This command will highlight all of the files you have changed int he last 7 days within the Files window so that you can easily and painlessly upload them at the same time. You can also modify the amount of time that dream weaver uses to find the data up or down to 1 day if you want. The contextual menu is that drop down menu to the far right of the files window (it looks like a bulleted list with a box around it and a small arrow pointing down). When you click on it, select "edit" and then "select recently modified." A dialog box will come up and allow you to change the timeframe if you want. You can do "Files created or Modified in the last ____ days" or "Files created or modified between ____ and ____" Hit "Okay" and dreamweaver will proceed to find and hilight all fo the files within the Files window. Then, hit the blue arrow to "put" or upload all of the files at once, and youre done! Hope this helps. It's not exactly what you were looking for, but much better than uploading your entire site again for no reason.
Hi Guys, I have been searching for several weeks now for same answer to the big question. 'How do you find and upload the multiple files changed by find and replace or even updated by template' This is of course ignoring the timely process of using the built in Synchronize function on bigger sites. Also my 'Select Recently Modified' function in Dreamweaver CS4 returns a Javascript error. The basic search function the comes with Windows, allows searching by 'File Name' & 'Dates', even better once you get a list of files you can sort them by Title, Type, Date and Time. Select all the files you want and them open them all up in Dreamweaver. Now that is solved the next problem I run into is how to select and put/upload all the opened files. At the moment I haven't found a solution for this and for now it is just a case of Selecting a open file pressing CTRL+SHIFT+U to upload the file closing the file after it has uploaded and then doing the same for the next open file until all the open files have been uploaded. There is a tool I found here which looks like it might address some of the problems we are facing here although it costs $5USD wwwDOTcommunitymx.com/abstract.cfm?cid=AAD0B80A624F03D5
Has anyone seen this error resolved? I've come accross the same error, which reads: "While executing onClick in SelectRecentlyModified.html, the following JavaScript error(s) occurred: At line 370 of file "Mac OS X:Applications:Adobe Dreamweaver CS4:Configuration:Menus:MM:SelectRecentlyModified.js": DWfile.getAttributes(listItem) has no properties" Anyone seen this or know how to fix it? I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.2, using Dreamweaver CS4, and have been able to use the Select Recently Modified feature in the past with no errors.
Alright so I have a verified solution that just worked for me. This thred is for Dreamweaver MX but I'm using CS3. I think it will still work as I remember the option for a million years ago but I've never used it before today. 1 - First, to be safe close all open documents. then go into site manager and edit the site you're using. on the 'Advanced' tab in the 'Remote Info' section select the option 'Automatically Upload Files to Server on Save', in CS3 this is near the bottom, then save your options and close the site manager. 2 - Next do a FIND ONLY for the term you'll be replacing. Select 'Entire Current Local Site' or 'Selected Remote Files' or whatever you like. 3 - In the results window highlight all options (click first - hold shift - click last) and press enter to open them all. 4 - Do the Same find operation but now replace the term as well. This will edit all your open documents and you'll have to save all of them (hint: you know this worked if all your tabs have an * after the file name to indicate it is an unsaved file) 5 - Go to File > Save All. this will save and 'Automatically Upload Files to Server on Save'. Opt. - if you're anything like me, going back into site manager and turning off 'Automatically Upload Files to Server on Save' is probably a good idea right about now. There you go. Not super awesome but a big time saver. if you're doing this on several thousand files at once then alter step three to only open a section of files small enough for your ram to handle and alter step 4 to only work on 'Open Documents' in the find and replace. Then Lather, Rinse, Repeat. P.S. I just tested if you do find replace on unopened files it does NOT 'Automatically Upload Files to Server on Save'. Lame.
I spent a good couple of hours over a few of days. Still no solution. The recent post in this thread by "rootinfinity" is the best work around I have seen of any of the forums I have visited to date. I just tried the "rootinfinity" method and got and got 980 results as the word appeared 4 times in each page that was linked to my template, I suppose if I used a word "hotpinkpants" or something silly that did not appear anywhere in my website when the template updates all the pages with the word "hotpinkpants" I could search for this term in my entire site as there would only be 1 instance in each page. My result would then be 245 pages. If I opened them all did a 'find and replace' to remove the word "hotpinkpants" and used the 'File' > 'Save All' (ensuring that my 'Advanced' > 'Remote Info' > 'Automatically Upload Files to Server on Save' was checked)
