How can I test my .htaccess file?

    My provider seems to allow some apache commands and not others.
    It would be great if I could send a command in PHP to apache and, by the reply i get, check if that would work or not, (or see if it works as expected).

    For example with, "ErrorDocument 404 ...", it does not always seem to work, I am not sure if it is because of my provider or because I am doing something wrong.
    In the case of the ErrorDocument I get a "page not found" error, but I don’t know if it is because my redirected page was not found, if there was a mistake in my .htaccess or if apache did not even read my “ErrorDocument” entry.

    So, how can I test what apache will do with my .htaccess?
