How can I switch registar now domain is expiring?

I have a .com domain name which is expiring in a few days, just got a notice. It's registered on my old account with another registar, whereas now I have most of my domains on Godaddy. Is there any way I can transfer the domain name across through re-registration without having to pay any fee and without the risk of it being stolen in between?

    Thanks!

Typically, the losing registrar would most likely not allow you to transfer a domain name which is about to expire. No matter what, either at the old place or at Godaddy, you still need to pay for renewal as it will ultimately expire. At the moment, what you could do is to just renew at the old registrar then depending on the policy of your current registrar, you could do the transfer once your renewal issue is cleared.

You can still transfer it if it has more than a week remaining before expiring. Firstly you'll have to unlock the domain, confirm that Administrative Contact has your own email address, Get the Authorization code (EPP) from current registrar.

Now initiate the transfer from the registrar of your choice, just mention domain to transfer, its EPP code and pay the money of course :) Now you'll get two emails in couple of days (One from losing registrar and one from gaining registrar), you just have to approve both of them by following instructions. The domain will be transfered in next couple of days.

I dont recommend to transfer if it has less than 10 days before expiry.

If it is close to the expiry date, transferring a domain is risky
