How can I scan my site for viruses?

How can I check my website for Malware/viruses that may have been put there by malicious parties? I see lots of checks for desktop computers, but where can I check sites?

I don't think either of those would work on my Unix server...and I have enough half-installed apps on there already. Does anyone know of an online scanner that checks for viruses by URL? Or have a strong virus detector on their system and want to check a few sites?
This is probably a false alarm.

Um...I'm sorry, that made no sense to me. WED files? Host? You mean try to get support on a possible virus from my host?
I don't think my host will respond well to that.
Or do you say I ought to have something built in to the server to do this?

ClamAV says it's for Linux. This is amazing! There isn't an online resource for this? There's twenty different sites to check Pagerank, but nobody has come up with an online virus scan by URL? Somebody do it, please! Just think of the Adsense...
I really don't think I understand ClamAv enough to attempt to install it. And I don't have Cpanel on my server, my server is crappy.

    To Rfdavid:
Features...up-to-date check on all known viruses by domain and root server.
Real-time screenshots in various browsers...especially IE versions. The one that currently does this is showing virus alarms on several browsers, is glacially slow, and operates on German machines. www.browsershots.org if you can improve on that, they are the only one I've found and that stinks.
If it detects viruses and other unwanted injections, that would be great.
    Perhaps an FTP/repair option.
PM me and I'll help beta test.

well you don't really have to worry about viruses if it is a unix/linux machine since they've got relative low number of viruses on that maching. however, if the linux/unix system is a file server with other windows desktop on it, as someone pointed out in the above, clamav is definitely an option.

also, if you are hosting with somebody else, why don't you bother since all responsible ISP will do their best to deny attacks or viruses

On,it is so bad to got viruses. My suggestion is to download all your files, and scan them at the end of your computer. But for some viruses which hide in your datebases is very hard to deal with.Usually i would like to call the hosting provider for help, and most of them are willing to give you a hand.

My preferred method would be to install subversion (or some similar versioning tool) and track your whole website with it.

That way, if ANY file changes, subversion will know about it and tell you which file it is. This means that any new file that contains a virus would be flagged up, even if it was so new that the virus checkers didn't know about it yet. It will also detect other kinds of malicious activity like hosting phishing pages on your site.

My site is infected with advancedxpdefender and I need to scan to find the backdoor or disguised file but my cpanel on hostgator does not have virus scan HELP!

I've removed the code from infected files on my wordpress blog (pops up a window asking people to install a fake anti-virus) but every few hours it comes back.

Best choice here is to download and install ClamAV by far.

As for Viruses that don't infect Linux, that's not the point of scanning most linux servers.

You need to scan linux servers to make sure your not hosting PHP Shells, back doors, or root kits. All of which can help an attacker break into a Linux server.

It's just a matter of following the install instructions.

Then running freshclam and then clamscan.

Well, let us know what your operating system is. I'd suggest you grab a copy of Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows.. Through my experience and knowledge, this does the job the most. It's incredibly well at it. They update their definitions every 4 hours or so as well. Additionally, I don't mind assisting you either. I specialize in web application security, and I don't mind taking a look at your issue. PM me or send me an IM over AIM. My screen name is PFR.
