First of all make the anchor text of your link in your sig to be "Sports Forum" and not the domain itself. Just check our sigs - we're all doing that.

Then you need lots of backlinks from a lot of sites and it's best if they are related to your niche - sport.

Heres a tip. Try a lower competition sports keyword....

Such as football players laces... etc.

Dont try and grab first page on competitive keywords. The big boys are after them and for you my man...It'll end in tears

    Hi,

My experiences with my own domain has lead me to believe that the traditional approaches to SEO are becoming less effective - e.g. links. What seems to count more and more is fresh content and traffic. I wrote a short article on this subject.

Google, Google Analytics, and the Changing Face of SEO

I think that it is going to be difficult to get good SERP until you build traffic.

Ok Keith, this was not as hard as I thought it would be...

    1st: Know your competition

    Your competition for this keyword term is;

    sports-forum.com, a PR4 site (ok-a little above average)

a rather low traffic site with a 981,546 Alex rank...It has the number 1 spot for your keyword. Can't even call it an Authority site yet, it has 5 outbound links and roughly 17 other sites link to it, all of them are of minor importance.

I will assume "your" site is optimized for your keyword "sports forum" ? If not, do so and check your keyword density with a 'keyword density tool" < you can Google that! Shoot for a tleast 5% keyword density.

Now to the links, in short you need inbound links from sites with more authority than yours! Google will only think you are as important as other sites of importance tell Google you are , (they tell Google with inbound links)...

The quickest and most controlled method for you to use yourself, would be for you write 20-30 unique quality articles, optimized around the keyword "sports forum" while including a sub keyword in the title as well, such as "Sports Forum: The Super Bowl Upset!" or to focus on a sub niche with no competition such as "High School Sports Forum" - write a relevant article about this topic depending upon what your site does.

Now, the important part, submitted all your articles individually to Ezine Articles! PR6 - Google loves them! Each article will link to "your site." When you are done submitting your 20-30 articles you will have 20-30 quality inbound links from a PR6 ranked site, which in Google's eyes will make you more of an authority site than Sports-Forum.com...You will rise in the rankings to take the desired spot....

There are many variations of this method, but this is probably the fastest, easiest, and most direct method you can start doing right now!

    take care

Sports forum will probably take you a year or more to rank #1 for...if not longer. If I were you I would try to rank for long tail and less competitive keywords first. Than after you do well for these terms work your way up to the more competitive terms and it will be easier to rank it. Ranking in a competitive niche doesn't happen overnight...it takes work, experience, dedication, and knowledge to name a few.

I think there is much more to this site than what might meet the eye at first glance. If you read about this site, and how long the organization has been around, I think there is much below the surface. My guess it would be very difficult to get on the top, especially since it is already beating out some pretty tough players.

If some SEO expert suggests that this is a no-brainer, then I would suggest that you look at your total competition for the first page and wonder how much has already be spent getting on the page, and how much effort it might take you. Be patient, be focused, and you might get there. But do not be disappointed if it doesn't happen. First page is tough. I know, I've been there and I've been knocked off. :)

    Good luck!

I think that links are a small subset of the effort nowadays. Traffic and content are key. Of course, some very well placed links from sites that Google knows are both good and difficult to get on, are also quite an asset.

Well, Google would love for you to spend money on Adwords, which is one way.

The other, more cost-effective way (depending upon how much you value your time), is to aggressively market and advertise some unique aspect of your forum. If you can find some good forum posters to kick start things, it certainly helps. But you have to bring something new and different to the web. People just don't return to a site, if it is less than their favorite similar site, and posters will not post unless the forum is active and interesting. Forums are notoriously difficult to get started. You may want to think through what kind of "forum" you want to build, and what you think you can bring to the table that is new.

I've been working on my site for a year, and am just starting to feel some traction. I am in a space that is in my comfort zone, and which I believe I can make unique and interesting.

For example, most people still think that Google is dependent upon links, as they were many years ago. I think that Google's algorithms have evolved far beyond this, and are now much better, and much more difficult to manipulate. I have seen that with my own site.

So, imagine you are in business, and you have a product/service that you want people to buy into. Why should they? If you can articulate this, then you are at the beginning of the answer to your question.

    Hope this helps,
    Rich

Yes thats exactly what I mean. You can use directory submissions, classified ads, forum signatures, blog comments .... and other techniques you could use. Never stop doing that.

BTW, you could join my forum and get a link to your site as well. :)

You have a lot of work to do if you want to rank #1 for sports forum.

First off, you need more content on your site. Get members to post more on your site and create an active community. That should be your number 1 goal rather than going for just search engine rankings.

Next, you want to optimize your site for the keywords that you will be targeting. Use sports forum in the beginning of your title tag as well as other important on-page attributes such as header tags and link anchor text.

Finally, you need inbound links from other authoritative sites in your niche. Have the link anchor text display "sports forum". You'll need at least 5,000 links before you even think about ranking for that keyword. Good luck!

Use your targeted keywords as anchor text and get links from related sites.
