how can I promote single word phrases ?

I'm running an adwords account and want to promote a specific landing page, when I use phrases as keywords I get a very high quality score for each phrase, but when I tried to use only one word I got a low quality score (QS=1).

    For example:

Landing page that deals with "valentine flowers".

When I use the keywords "buy valentine flowers" or "choose valentine flowers" i get for those phrases a very high quality score.

But when I tried to promote to word "flowers" i get quality score = 1.

I understand that the this word is not specific enough, but I was wondering how can people promote this specific word, or to be more general how can I promote single word phrases ?

One-word and generic keywords are generally not a good idea to use. If you bid on flowers, you'll trigger for all sorts of unrelated searches such as "how to treat allergy to flowers" and "when do flowers bloom in may". This only hurts your QS.

I agree with your explanation, but that makes me wonder - do you mean that there is no way to promote the word "flowers" by itself ? Sounds not realistic.

I beleive that there are people targeting this specific word and I'm trying to understand how are they doing it...

Sure you could use flowers by itself. Just be prepared to have low QS and high costs because flowers by itself is not relevant. Not sure why you say it's not realistic. Your QS tells you it's not.

You could also have a long negative keyword list but I don't like doing this myself. I'd rather find positive keywords than spend my time adding negative ones.

There are surely others using this keyword. They likely all have the same problem. The smarter ones, a small minority it seems, stop doing it and use more relevant keywords. The others stop only to be replaced by others.
