I've come across millions of website owners asking the same question. The answer is always the same: success takes time and a lot of hard work. If you're not willing to spend a great deal of time and/or money, you might as well quit before you waste any more time. Unless you know of a high ranking site who can give free advertising (and/or free link), you're just going to have to roll up your sleeves and get to work. However, if you have the money you might want to invest in hiring a SEO expert or company for at least the first while. I started by going to my public library and taking out every book I could find on SEO and internet marketing. I also spent about a $1,000 on Google Adwords while I waited for my site to start ranking for a few minor keywords. Unless your site is making you a consistent revenue, paying for pay per click advertising can get expensive. You will need to learn as much as you can about SEO. The biggest part of SEO these days is finding relevant, high quality sites to link to yours. However, this is not always an easy task. Best of luck!
