Making a Flash based page or site is a spectacularly bad idea. But if you just must, be sure to use the alternative content provision of the object element.

That's the only thing I can think of, and I'll agree with you, 100% Flash sites are horrible.

Flash based sites == Miserable ****ing fail on EVERY count.

I particularly like how 99.99% of them load on my system as a big blank white page. (I browse with plugins turned off by default)

Ranks right up there with frames, tables wrapping single elements, and a whole host of other bad practices.

I wish I could find it, but someone on another forum posted a link to a page, some accessibility site, which showed how to have text-versions of all the content in your Flash movie appear for the likes of screen readers and teh googles (there is an Accessibility panel within Flash itself, which can add text equivilants for your movies). There was also something about how to let users enter and exit the movie using in-page links... there was some trick to it, because plain old links didn't work in every browser or something. Certainly, you wouldn't want to rely on ActionScript for the links.

    Here's something for reading: http://www.webaim.org/techniques/flash/text.php

Depending on what the content is, you may be able to build a normal text-based site and sit the Flash over the top of it. Those without Flash should get the site underneath (NoScript sometimes gives me the big white box but other times just a small red border). Another option, often seen on luxery sites and web design company sites, is the main page to have the user select either HTML or Flash as their way of viewing the site.

Fallback content is piss simple in an object, and there's no good reason not to include it or to design for it if you are going to throw together a flashtard site.
