Thank you for all the feedback, everyone. Indeed, last night I went and registered a website and stuck an affiliate link on it. There's no other content and I don't expect anyone to click on it, or find it yet, but I'll grow it more today. One foot in front of the other.

I have a specific SEO question. If I'm targeting a keyword - let's say "goo widget", and I bought goowidget.com, does it make sense for me to register goowidget.net, .biz, .info, .org, and goowidgets.com, etc? If so, should I just post redirects on each of those sites to my primary affiliate site, or should I put unique content on each and maybe have them link to each other? My goal is to dominate the keyword, but I don't know the best strategy for doing that.

You did good by using keywords in your domain name. As far as registering all domains, it is a coin toss. Since you don't know anything about marketing, I would not waste my money on it at this point. On the other hand, there is always the chance you might have the perfect domain name that might be worth something later on.

Affiliate marketing needs to be treated like a true business and not some 'get rich quick' scheme. Act as though it's truly your business. You're going to have to put in time and effort. Don't expect results right away. Keep doing enough of the right things and overtime you'll reach your goal.

First off nice job, you're already a step ahead of the rest. Most people get analysis-paralysis and fail before they even tried.

Concerning your question, no. If you have registered the .com and you're more established (more age to the domain, links are older, etc...) it will be very difficult for someone new to come along, register the .net and unsurp you.

If you are a skilled programmer, you should be able to make $300 USD a month easy. You can sell your services on websites like Elance, etc. Start slow, gain a reputation and get some positive feedback. I don't see any reason why you could not make much more than that a month.

Actually, I was only able to grab the .net, not the .com (sorry, I know I said goowidget.com). But the .com is just being owned and not used. Does the same hold for the .net? That is, if I build the links and let them age and the .com owner doesn't, am I in just a good as position? Or should I opt for a less ideal .com, like "getgoowidgets.com"?

You can make a lot more than that if you put your mind to it. The key is following through... most people that fail at internet marketing do so because they fail to follow through with any one thing. They constantly buy new ebooks and new methods trying to find that free lunch, but the key is to work at it consistently. People will spend 4 years in college in hopes that they will get a good job afterwards, but they try internet marketing, and they aren't rich in 30 days so they give up or try something new.

The .net will work just fine. Since you are focusing on search engine promotion, the extension of the domain really doesn't matter.

The best free method for affiliate marketing is actually article submission. You can check out Ezinearticles, Goarticles and other article directories to check out the quality of articles. Then you have to learn to make a landing page.
Seo techniques for article writing and landing page are involved. You have to learn through trial and error.
