How can I know if teh domain was penalized?

I want to purchase a domain, it has PR 0. How can I know if it was penalized by Google and lost PageRank due to penalties/sold adspace or just not promoted enough to have a PR? It does appear in Google when I look the domain up.

Seller has no traffic or previous PR details.

Thanks in advance for any advice:)

make a search for the following term in google(along with quotes) "domainname.com" . if it is banned by google then it should not appear in the search result.

    Cheers

You can check if the domain is penalized in Search Engines. If the domain is penalized, it should have no or less indexed pages in the respective search engine. The operator which checks the indexed pages in most of the search engines is “site”. Search for “site:domain” in the search box and see the results.
    Or can use this http://www.iwebtool.com/google_banned

    thanks for your replies guys!

The thing is, a few of my sites lost pagerank because of selling links but they are still indexed in google very well, even 'site:domain.com' give hundreds of results, and despite xx,xxx backlinks -- still PR0. I know it was penalized because it was a link-selling machine, but I wanted to know for sure before I pay good money for someone's PR0 domain.

Oh, just checked with that iweb tool, it says the domain I was after is "likely" to be banned, so thanks a lot for the link!!!

Incase it helps, I have checked a few domains and they all say Likely banned although 1 of the domains I checked was 1 of my domains that I currently have parked so perhaps parked domains will show as likely banned on that tool as mine is certainly not banned.

So the tool may have it's inaccuracies or it may always show likely banned to domains that have no backlinks or PR.

    Just a thought.
