If you want increase traffic using free methods I would suggest the best way would be to gain more backlinks to your website and posts in forums with a linke in your signature your website. By increasing backlinks to your website (links from other websites to yours) you will increase your position in Search Engines and thus gain more traffic. If you would want to go the other way and pay for ads on Google and other search engines it can put a huge hole in your wallet if you are not careful. These ads are usually called PPC or Pay Per Click ads. (BTW the free mtehod I described is called Organic way of getting traffic, vs paying for ads on Google or search engines.)
SEO known as search engine optimization is a free way to get lots of prospect on your site. However, it takes time to get your site on the top of the SERP. Learn SEO and back link building, you can use strategy like blogging, article marketing, pay per click to get visitors to your site quicker. They all need som learning curves, hone your skills and you will be fine.
