First of all, don't just think about the short-term crap links from scraper sites and generic PR sites... they're not worth much in the long haul and won't lead to enough targeted traffic in most cased anyway. That's not what press releases are about. I run a PR firm, so this stuff is kind of my life. Word from the wise... get the approach right from the beginning instead of making the common webmaster mistake of creating press release spam. If you learn to do it right early on, you'll get enormously more benefit out of it in traffic, links, exposure, etc. Here are a few resources of mine that you can check out. They'll help you in writing a press release from start to finish.

PR is an announcement. It must be an unusual news such as the introduction of a new product etc. If you submit the PR to a site, it wll be distributed to many subscribers who shall read and follow up to your site. Some PR sites allow tagging so that you can set up keywords related to PR.
