You can have the best website in the world, but when people coming to your website are looking to hire prostitutes and you are selling a guide about how to stay a virgin for the rest of your life - you can have 10 000 visitors but 0 sales. I'll guarantee you that.

500 unique visitors in your first week is, really good, well I start but doesn't invest in traffic or publicity so I don't know but it sounds nice

I would be really careful when buying traffic. You have to make sure its real traffic. I prefer to write articles b/c its extremely targeted people. Think about it, Would you rather have 1,000 general visitors or 50 visitors interested in buying what you are selling. i will admit article marketing is slower but the results are permanent not to mention free.

If you have a budget and want quick results ppc might be best. Just be caeful b/c you can drain your wallet fast.
