How can i gain traffic to my site?

Im wondering if anyone can guide me on free advertising or paid (if its not too much money) To generate traffic to my website.

Ive setup a online auction kinda like ebay but smaller. Currently there are no official auctions going live as i need members to start posting auctions (so i know this couldl turn people away until it picks up)

Im just wondering is there anyhtink i can use or do to bring visitors to my site so they sign up and start using it?
