Does anyone know of a free service that lets you type in a domain and you can see where it is hosted and more importantly where it was previously hosted?

    Try http:// whois.sc/domain name
You can lookup IP changes and nameserver changes history.

    Try domaintools.com

You can check the nameservers and IP address.

I looked at these sites before and they charge for this service unfortunately... with domain tools it costs $30 per month because this tool comes in a package with other tools., which sucks because I only want to use this tool.

You can also try who.is but it will only show you where the domain is hosted currently. Why do you need to know where it was hosted before?
