How can I explain what directories do for my websites?

    my family that is on the Internet a not lot needs to know what does one get when a person pays for a directory? Can anyone out there please help me? I typically pay for featured links on my websites. Can anyone please help me explain what a person gets when they pay for their website,blog etc in directories?

    The more links you get pointing to your website, the more popular your website gets.
    Search engines like popular website, so they place you higher when displaying search results.

    Also, having links pointing to your website on popular web pages gives you even more popularity.
    Usually you should pay only for having your link on a popular website.
