The easiest way is to do something truly unique. My first major website - I made an original, short, anime style movie. I posted about it in a few usenet groups. It was downloaded so much the servers went down and my host, at the time, banned me forever. This was back in the day when the bandwidth for downloading movies was anything but common, and since there was no such thing as H.264 or Mpeg4 the file size was huge. When I got it back up on a new service, it went on to be downloaded over 100,000 times in one month. I never monetized the site or video directly, but it got tons of press, led to paid writing gigs, and a major publishing deal. All of these things continue to feed into my sites getting a pretty good amount of daily visitors.
