forum links are ok but there are just low quality links. if you want to get some noticeable differences, you need to build profile links by thousands. one or two hundred profile links won't do you any good. you might just as well not do it at all. main problem of profile links are to get them indexed. usually 99% of the profile links don't get indexed by itself. so for such poor quality links, you build the forum profiles and then work hard to get them indexed don't really worth it in my view. if you have some decent budget and can subscribe to one of those xrumer blasting services that blasts 1000 or 2000 profiles per day, then in few months you might see some benefit given that you plan properly.

regarding other forms of link building, article submission is one of the best ones. you can also write articles and publish to various high PR blogs and web 2.0 pages that will give you decent link juice.
