My background image in my website takes a few seconds to appear when opening the site, and that kind of leaves a negative first impression to visitors.

So, how can I make the image lighter (in file size) so that when opening the website it appears faster - and not compromise the quality of the image?

Many free image browsers (XnView, Irfan, FastStone) offer the ability to re-code your JPG images and save them with higher compression algorithm.
But JPG's compression is a lossy one, so there will ALWAYS be some quality loss. The question is if it is noticeable - you will have to try several different compression factor values and decide which one gives you the best quality/compression ratio.

I rely heavily on IrFanView, it is a great utility for doing just what you ask for.
