In Google, search for stuff like "Powered by vBulletin", etc.

vBulletin is paid forum script but it is worth to its value. You can find lot of vBulletin templates by third party and lot of support from vBulletin and other places. vBulletin is the best forum software.

Are you wanting to see what type of forum a specific site is running, or do you just want a listing of sites using specific forum engines? If it's the first, try checking the site on http://builtwith.com/ - it is usually able to tell you what tech a site is using. If it's the latter, just do a Google-search for the type of software, and you'll get plenty of hits on sites running on them.

In Google Chrome, there is an extension called Appspector which can also help tell you what various sites are using.

In firefox, I use an addon called wappalyzer. It instantly shows you the backend of any web pages that you are visiting. Available for chrome too, but less good in there.

An example for current page, it tells me DP is using the following technologies (from left-to-right)
Cloudflare, Font Awesome, Gravatar, Nginx, SPDY, XenForo, jQuery, Google Analytics, comScore.

Mostly works 99%. I've seen once it gave a false sign on a site that I was working on (it tells me using Drupal while I didn't, I simply link a logo image to /sites/all/themes/my-theme/logo.jpg --which is usually a trace of a Drupal site.

The best part of it, this addon tells me new technologies/scripts that I have never heard before.
