How can I build a good twitter account?

My question here is I'm starting a new twitter account and I was wondering if there was any particular way of building up a ton of followers in the least amount of time possible. Is there any particular way of doing this? Just a thought I had and figured maybe someone here could answer it.

Since I am "old" in age and fairly new to Twitter, could you explain what you mean by what you are mentioning in point #1?

    Thanks...

I agree with him. I've seen/heard that the # symbol is used in Twitter quite often, however I have no understanding as for what. Can someone please explain this to me and the other two people here inquiring about it?
    Thanks

First, engage in a tweet that you can possibly give a good reply, remember, good comments will not only benefit the person who Tweet but also the person who Tweeted a comment. If you posted something good or replied a tweet that will cause curiosity or debate the better, this can help you gain influential Twitter users, thus giving you a better chance to gain more followers.

Maximize your every tweet by adding your keywords at the start of each tweet as possible, add your links, if you have long URL use websites that offer URL shorteners, this way you can use the full 140 or so characters with juicy info helping you gain followers.

It's ok but from past experience they don't stay followers for long.

Make every post count. Avoid spamming people, because people look at spammers like they look at hackers. Like everyone else is saying, follow people that discuss similar topics as you. Its a great way to network once you get the hang of it.

Add more followers by following people who shares with similar interests of your account. Post regularly what has been updated. Try not to look like a spammer.

It is always important to interact and talk with other members rather than just constantly post links, @mentions are important ways of interacting with other users.
