How can I best use my keywords

Ok, so I've done my research and I'm the proud owner of an excel spreadsheet with a bunch of keywords all appropriate to my site, each with low competition and respectable volume.

How now to best use these keywords? Here's what I think - but I'm still educating myself.

    1. Keyword appears in <title> tags.
    2. Keyword is used in the text on the page maybe 3 to 5 times.
    3. Keyword used in inbound links from other sites where possible.
    4. Keyword used in meta descriptions.

Is this about the gist of it? Am I on the right tracks?

    Hi Spock,

Yes. Use in Url, title, description and keywords meta tags. Externally use as anchor text for incoming links.

    Good luck,

    Sam

Cool, thanks samwinport and selectsplat. Sounds really simple! Am I missing something...or is it really that straightforward?

You mentioned all of the easy stuff. What will be tedious is the link development. You know what your inbound links need to look like, now you just have to find about 10k different do follow places with good pagerank to put it.

I agree with selectsplat. In addition, I suggest do not do massive link building because it's not natural. Google can easily determine sites that have been promoted massively and this might harm your site.

Does <h1> <h2> etc make any difference compared to using normal tags?

What you've mentioned are on-page seo. It's really that easy as you said, because though it helps a bit, the most important part to boost your ranking is link building, which is much more difficult and needs more time.

Oh - one more question: does an inbound link from a forum (like this one!) contribute toward your inbound link count? e.g. if you had something in your signature then every post you made would be an additional link??

    (Sorry if question is naive!)

Its worth putting your link in your signature with the correct anchor esp on sites such as DP or any other site that is established and well known as you'll get indexed quicker

    That is the basics.
You also want to considered "related" keywords in your text and links.
So instead of just using "dog" for the keyword mix it up and use "canine", "mutt", "puppy", etc..
Using a thesaurus is a good way to find the related words.

In the end, the way Google explains it, is that you should be able to remove your main keywords from your site and people would still know what your site is about.

    All great info.

    So the new list reads:

    • Keyword appears in <title> tags.
    • Keyword is used in the text on the page maybe 3 to 5 times.
    • Keyword used in inbound links from other sites where possible.
    • Keyword used in meta descriptions.
    • Keyword Externally use as anchor text for incoming links.
    • Keyword used in URL
    • Keywords in alt tags
    • keywords in h1 tags near the top of the page

Would you give these equal weighting?

For better result, you can use in H1 tag also...that has good weightage..
    use in Image alt tag...
don't use more than 4-5 times on a same page in text...

As before, is it any better to use <h1> <h2> tags rather than normal tags?
