    Link popularity is good and the best form would be one way links.

    Article marketing could do your site a lot of good.

    Press releases too.

    Make profit through being an affiliate to a product related to your niche; pay per click ads...

    Beware! Don't build the site just for the money. This should always come in second with giving some good to the Internet users/ community.

    If you have these people in mind, you'll be assured of constant traffic. And eventually, avid consumers.

    Just put your forum link in here, like I have, if its hot like my forum is people will wanna check it out and most likely join up. Its hard in the beginning but if you have good topics and something people want to see more of, they will join. My site is brand new and already I have a good amount of members. My forum is just booming. Give it a shot.

    Great SEO. If you are running vBulletin, there are plenty of mods out there to enhance its SEO friendliness. Also, link exchanges with other sites of similar topics will be of great help.

    I recommend you check out www.theadminzone.com for more info on getting started on forums.

    And because it is new, you probably shouldn't concern yourself with turning a profit just yet. That comes later ;)

    First things first. Forums rarely make it big when they run the default template ;) . Get a new one. Free of paid, anything thats not the default.

    I was gonna suggest the get paid posters that KingofKings beat me to.
    Also post yourself and have your friends post and add some quality content that people would actually find useful and would wanna read, dont make it 10 pages long or anything like that....
    Check out the social networking sites, they can help promote the site...

    advertise in another foruns with the same niche of your forum..social networks,digg,stumble..
    and as said superrichguy ,get paid posters to get more content in your forum

    then move for
    (*) Link Exchange (Sell/buy)
    (*) Get this better SEOed
    (*) Buy some Banner Space at some websites
    (*) For a fixed amount, tryout Google Adwords
    (*) Get some articles written about this website, and submite then to some ezines
    (*) Have a press release submit that free online.
