Hmm, that`s sidestepping the fact that once reviewed and if passed, the link is placed. Bottom line to me has always been that to get your link in the Yahoo directory you must pay for it. And, as far as I`m aware, those links are `dofollow.`
I think it would be too hit and miss if google was to try and work out which links were paid links. They would end up hurting people who dont even deserve it !
of course yahoo 'sells links' but supposedly the bar is set high enough so that there's only/mostly quality sites there. that are properly reviewed of course....come down to it, they are the authority directory so google would never penalize them. for all google's talk, there are many paid directories that have not been affected with loss of pagerank (at least since the big shake up in 2007 when hundreds of directories were hit) - it's mostly been the bidding directories lately - and a lot of them now have the nofollow so that's ok with google as they don't pass any pagerank. i admit i don't know much about other kinds of paid links.
I think Google have there own ways of detect paid link, which is not cear to me yet. And also people competitor who knows a site is buying links do report to Google for investigations.
Why buy links? when there are lots of sites that offer free links.. You just have to be patient in finding them.
