Google will be overtaken one day... but there is little point in getting too excited since it will be a long time

Maybe if you blew up ALL of there datacenters and every server associated with them, then hold the engineers hostage for 20 weeks, this should give another search engine provider a chance to get there engine used as google.com will not work.

Then the new search engine providers flew aeroplanes over each state dropping 2000 flyers every 300 meters from the window ( Like in Grand Theft Auto PS2 )

Cuil does not have anything special yet that will crush Google, unless they have some aces up their sleeves.

Not that I'd like to see Google crushed or trampled, but a little competition never hurt. But for those of you who think Google is some unstoppable force, I'd like to say one word to you:

    EBAY.

For years Ebay was the unbeatable giant when it came to online sales and auctions. Smaller sites tried to sprout up and take a slice of the pie, but they were always snuffed out or bought out before they got anywhere even close.

Yet Ebay fell to Amazon, rather recently too, and just laid off 10% of their workforce. Sellers have left Ebay in DROVES to go to Amazon, good sellers too - ones with shooting star feedback - sellers who put Ebay where they were.

How'd it happen? Ebay did it to themselves. They kept upping seller fees and took giant dumps on their sellers by skewing the feedback system toward the buyer's advantage. They thought their buyers were the main reason they were in business and so they catered the their every whim while crapping all over their sellers.

Soooo... in comparison here, the searchers (people using google) would be the buyers and the webmasters would be the sellers. If google were to crap on us, we'd begin working our sites in the direction of other search engines. Less and less GOOD sites would show up in google searches, because all the skilled webmasters would be concerning themselves with other SE pursuits. And once the good sites started showing up more and more elsewhere, and less and less on Google, that's when the giant would fall.

Now I'm no hater - I actually have very much faith in Google. I love their "Don't be Evil" slogan, and they have good roots. I hope they keep going in positive directions and don't waste time tinkering with stuff that doesn't always need to be fixed (like Ebay did). Overall, I'm pulling for them.

google became popular basically by becoming pop culture at a time of internet becoming bigger. As you introduce people to the internet word of mouth got out about google and such. People were more or less sick of yahoo's setup of crap placed everywhere and the search results not being very well placed. Since we are well after the age of people being born into the internet age they start using what their household does basically, which is google most of the time. However, alot of people still use other search engines, why? well find out and exploit that. I would bet that if you went to school from a child and your teachers believed in search engine Z, and all the computers had it and it became second hand to you, most of the people in a 5 years would move to search engine Z, but google would still have a large market share until you had enough years of newbies entering the market

    what a ridiculous thread
full of people posting crap to bump their post count

Google will remain on top for a long time to come because they have the infrastructure in place and the global brand awareness, doesnt matter how spammy there results are(which there not) most people who use the internet think that google IS th Internet and thats what they have to use as search.

the only possible way anyone will take overtake google in thee near future is if microsoft enforces msn search in thier sytems which they just wont be allowed to do.

stop talking about crap like cuil, thats just one huge piece of linkbait and they wont be here this time next year.

why beat the best anyway? maybe if individual isp's get together to create a virtual ad network based on the users ip but that would take years to chip away at googles revenue anyway

Google is not just a search engine anymore though, it was primarily just a search engine but now is a huge network of web tools, largely based around its search engine which is the core of the network.

I can't see Google being beaten due to the fact they haven't stopped at just a search engine, they have kept going with every other aspect they could think of/buy out therefore keeping the title of king of the internet and making sure the princes will have a perfectlly running country when they inherit the throne.

The fact that they don't have to sell their products and can let people use them for free is a biggie aswell especially when they are making their money through their advertising engines adwords and adsense rather than selling software like microsoft.

Ask yourself why G search is so popular in the first place. Fast, relevant results without extra clutter. Make a search engine that can do the same thing and you'll have a G rival.

G's other services are great as well and FREE!

I think this is spot on. Check out Aaron Wall's recent SeoBook post for an example of how they might do this. Basically if Google gets greedy and starts to demand too much in return for ever-decreasing SERP positions, and if they try to expand into too many areas, it could easily start a backlash.

Trends change all the time not only on the internet but life in general.

Google just has to miss the next big thing and they are toast.

Saying that, they have provided what others have failed to notice - what people really want:
Results that are good enough very quickly, not super-duper results with categories and other stupid things that take 5 secs to load.

Keep in mind that the entire website model is so young as a medium compared to TV and radio that the very way websites are created would have to change for someone to dethrone Google. Microsoft enjoyed this as the PC era came to be. Still today, no one dominates the PC like Microsoft. Same way, once things get so ingrained in daily life, it is difficult to change. Google is now a verb.

I have a few friends that work for Google, and judging by how they're treated and what they have to say about the company, I don't see that happening any time soon.

i travel a lot of country but it seem like google is not no.1 SE for most ppl not webmaster ....
Like in china, most of them they use baidu and they know yahoo.
In sri lanka, most of them use yahoo, even a hawkers know what is yahoo and know nothing abt google.
In Australia my skydive coach is using yahoo and hate google (he know google as a dumb company pay billion to buy a website, "Youtube"), a lot auzzie still using Yahoo ..
In taiwan, they use Yahoo as blog, Yahoo auction.
    In Japan Yahoo.
In NZ, Bakpak using Yahoo and IE (same as korea, 5 star hotel using IE and Yahoo).
In US ? how many percent is using Yahoo and google ? yah i know most user HERE use google but is the rate of using Yahoo (it ain't small) ..... we still can't figure out the real amount of Yahoo user and Alexa won't give yahoo number 1 and google no. 2 for no reason .....

Google now is trying to expend and creating the future, not maintain TOP 1 (chasing to be the ONLY one), no one said they is number 1 other then webmaster ....
My mum and dad use Yahoo :)
