Unless you have a website like facebook or myspace, traffic like that takes a long time to build up. Other options are fans sites, like for football, basketball or soccer. With the right tweaking and advertising you could get a steady stream of traffic. But for return traffic, you need daily updates, a forum or something to make people come back often. If the site is a fan site, I would create a youtube channel and start broadcasting videos. Copy what the big sports channels have done, like ESPN. But in a not so professional manner. Some people on youtube have tens of thousands of subscribers. This can bring untold traffic to your site. My videos on youtbe average about 12,000 views a day. And I average about 4,000 - 6,000 people visiting my site daily.
For a brand new site it might be pretty hard. You need either a lot of money for PPC or outstanding content for submittting to social bookmarking sites
Only answer to your question is quality content. People will only come to your site if it has something for them.

The true answer is you need to do EVERYTHING and do it DAILY! If you want 5000 a day then its gonna cost you eight hours a day for a few weeks to do it. Oh and signing up for a few banner exchanges doesn't hurt either ;-)
You will need to put in effort. The 5000 will not come easily. Promote your website with various ways including SEO, social bookmarking, articles submission, forum postings, directories submission and many other ways. Then, you will get there one day.

copper - can u explain what I would do to advertise? I comment on other blogs, leaving my permalink wherever I post in my name, as well as participate in forums like this one? I do not pay to advertise my site on other sites, if thats what you mean? Also been heavy on Twitter(Doctor_s) and using other social networking/bookmarking widgets as well. Well, I meant paying for advertising. Something, I guess, you don't want to do at this time. I'm afraid if you want a lof of traffic, buying traffic / advertising both off and online is the only way to do it. As you already found out, noob methods like signatures, blogging, Twitter, Social Networks...don't work. You also have a high bounce rate with these amateur methods, too.
