how can a domain registrar be wrong?

 twice in the past month some domains have showed up as available when they are already taken, how can this be? surely it is an automated process?

It's not like the domains have run out or recently changed ownership

One that just showed up as available was eLook.com then I went to buy it... already registered

    Anyone seen this happen before?

    James.

Not an expert in registrars, but these things may take awhile to propagate so they could be showing up as available when they have in fact been registered.

It's similar to trying to find a domain that is just about to be deleted. Some registrars show it as available the instant it drops while others show it as taken when it has in fact dropped.

Nothing you can do about it I'm afraid.

In my experiences, it can take up to 24 hours (and sometimes more) for a registrar to update their whois database. It is automated, but when you're talking about millions of names, it can take awhile.

Yes, seen it many times before, especially .cn names, as well as .co.uk

There are many sites out there when you run a whois it says that a domain is available, when in fact it is not.

Happened to me with Names.co.uk website and .es domain names that it was showing as available while in fact they were registered.
Also, same registrar was giving me false hopes around some .ie names

I have seen this happen more times then I can even remember.

The thing is if you find a domain name that is worth registering then just register it.

I myself have also lost many good ones.

Sure it's automated. But since humans aren't perfect, then why should you also
expect their creations to be perfect?

That's why registrars have this thing in their legal fine print like "we can't always
guarantee accurate results." But that's not going to stop people from developing
    unrealistic expectations.

I registered at godaddy with a certain website and it MISPELLED IT. I was so pissed off. And now I have to wait to make $10 before I can make a new one. :'( If anyone wants to donate $10 to me. I'll love you forever! :p

Misspelling domain names can be annoying once you have paid but that is how things are. No refunds, one just have to learn to live with it. $10 is not a fortune :)

I've experienced this many times. It can be disappointing if you're excited about, what you believe is a good domain name, only to find out it's already registered but life is full of little disappointments. Just gotta put your thinking cap on and move on to another one.

This is pretty common thing. I believe normally they take 24 hours propagate the results.
My initial guess is, perhaps the site from where you checked its availability was having an old record. This happens usually with companies having their own self made script. When ever I have to check the domain, I usually use my own reseller account or from main eNom site. And the results are always correct. :)

Try to change the website from where you check the availability of the domain.

MyDomain, and a few other registrars has got a nice domain suggesting tool.
Well, it is cool, and I bought a few names there, however it often suggests names and "says" they are available,
and in fact, you realise they are taken. Can be disappointing at times :)

Here is another instant domain search tool that I'm using, some of you will find it useful I'm sure :)

my CC has been billed from them 4 times , because i'm trying 4 time to register one and the same domain name. 4 time the result has been unsuccessful ... but my card is billed every time ... no comment
