Its good for increasing backlinks. But its better if they are dofollow. To increase the PR. These days PR doesn't matters, DA, PA should be high and i dont think backlinks helps to increase DA.
From an SEO point of view blog commenting doesn't help since the links are nofollow. But if you leave a useful comment it can help to network with other link minded bloggers which will help you to get links indirectly once you've formed relationships with some of them as well as any direct traffic benefits.

I make on search on Google Blogsearch for blogs in the niche that my site target. Then I visit the first 5 result and make a good comment there in a way that adds a new angle or twist to the original article there and then leave a link back to my site
Hi Dcristo, You are write that from SEO point of view if links are nofollow they are of no use and 95% blog commenting are nofollow links. But the benefit of blog commenting is that with quality commenting one can generate traffic through good relationship. The person who owns the blog gets traffic as well as its site content gets updated which is beneficial for his websites ranking in search engines.
but dcristo, is it that these traditional SEO blog commenting will work in 2013 or now its the end of such blog commenting techniques for website promotion, direct traffic generation.
