How bad does Google punishes duplicated content?

I have a website with lots of own written articles in it. Now I have an agreement with another webmaster wich allows me to use the articles from their site on my site.

I was wondering how bad this would be for my Google rankings. Anyone got an idea?

I have the same question... In my case it's the news I'm getting from other major sites like yahoo or msn. Though I provide the link and credit its source rightfully. Am I doing something wrong here?

When you say "harm" what exactly do you mean? SE will ban us?

A bit of duplicate content won't harm you, but your chances of ranking for this content is low unless you have a really strong domain.

Google "filters" duplicate copies, because it only wants one version to rank as there's no point having the top 10 for a query all the same document.

You can rank higher then the original, you just need a strong domain or more authoritative links pointing to your page then the original page. The best thing to do if you want to replicate material is add your own comments on it which will add some uniqueness to the page and allow you to rank for more various keyphrase combos.

"Now I have an agreement with another webmaster wich allows me to use the articles from their site on my site."

Are you going to include a link back to the original article?

I noticed that with my sites Google will remove duplicate content from the index but the site as a whole does not seem to be hurt. I'm sure if your sites not established it could cause penalties though, not totally sure..

I have no problem to submit the same articles to hundreds of article directories in order to hundreds or even thousands of backlinks. Google never penalizes my sites because of this way.

If you want to do bum marketing, please don't submit to the same article to hundreds of article directories. Only submit to the same article 10 top article directories. To ensure that Google will bring one of them to the top ranking for a targeted keyword.

Duplicate content won't help in anyway unless u can make the content unaccessible for google through robots.txt.
