I use a variety of methods but I found the simplist is to write some good content on my blog and ping it using Pingoat, I add a few new RSS subscribers each time I do that so it does work. I also use forums, craiglist and Fiverr but no paid promotion yet as Im on an experiement to see what I can get for free

I normally submit my site to a large number of online directories, so much so that I normally have a huge list of hundreds upon hundreds of web directories to submit to which I would, of course, need to finish by a certain deadline (to avoid accumulating refractions ). Getting your site listed and creating backlinks is a great way to get more traffic.
