How are popular threads selected?

    The new feature is a nice addition where popular threads are displayed a little below the top right corner of the main forum page (https://forums.digitalpoint.com/). However, I'm not able to find out a consistent pattern among the threads. Some threads are way back from the past, some are fresh. Some have more than 50,000 views while some have less than 5000. Some have a massive no. of replies while others have just a few. Maybe I'm missing something.:confused:
    Just curious as to what exactly makes a thread 'popular right now'? And what is the advantage of having these threads listed separately?

    It's simply based on the number of people viewing the thread right now.

    What I mean is, the stats about a thread as how many replies or views it has got till now, the date on which it was created etc. are not relevant here. Rather, it's based on the no. of people viewing it at a given moment, which can be any number which can/will always vary. So, there's scope for probability.

    Anyway, just curious as to how exactly listing these threads separately will benefit users?

    There isn't a huge benefit to users unless they want to see what threads are popular right now.
