Well, I was in 7th grade (1997) we had a project to do and the teacher advised us a good website to make researches. He even wrote the google name on the blackboard because no one knew how to spell. This is 9 years ago (I lived in Brazil).
This is the first time I came across with google, since then never stopped using it.

ALSO, did google EVER advertised in the early stages?? As mentioned above I heard about good by word of mouth.

Well, they were the search provider for Yahoo! and Google's logo was at the bottom.

They kept providing Yahoo search results well after it was known that they had created this monster competitor.

In fact, Yahoo!'s results were helped one year recently (2005?) because they sold their Google stock.

Yahoo! should have acquired them when they could (if it was available). They did end up acquiring Inktomi, another search provider not so dissimilar to Google at the beginning..

Anyway, I remember for years using IE's search list and spinning around to AltaVista, HotBot, Northern Exposure (?), and some other crap search engines. Was always frustrating.

I think I was late to the game hearing about Google, must have been 2000 or 2001.

wow! Great question. Like where were you when . . .
I guess it was around 98 or 99. I typed "search" in the yahoo search bar. This is exactly how I found Google.

Something like 1997 - with some problems with my Windows 95 IE. I was 13 years old (and did not get a lot about computers), so I asked a friend about it. He came home and open google. After that i tried useing it, but for the time being i decidet to stuck with Yahoo (I tought it was better). In 1998 when microsoft released Windows 98 amd my father updated the computer I start playing with it and cruch it (a lot of times). So he was bored to install it and showed me how to do it. And because I was searching for a drivers in yahoo and it was hard to find them i remembered for Google, and start useing it. Now The only search site I use is Google.com

alright so nobody laugh... 2002... no seriously. One day, I think I told my cousin to search for something and when he brought up google, I was like "what are you doing?" I had always used Yahoo but when he said google was better I thought I'd try it. I never ended up switching but I still use it every now and then.

I only wish I had heard about it in 1996 so I could have poured every cent into their stock!!
