People who play sports are not in shape because of the play itself, but instead the preperation for playing. Mostly the weightlifting. Muscle requires a lot of fuel to even have it. So somebody with a lot of muscle sitting in a chair is burning more calories than someone with no muscle. In theory, someone who was fat could eat the same amount of food and lose a lot of weight as long as they start pumping serious iron and put on loads of muscle.
