How old is your site? Google give a New Content Boost to new pages or new sites, this boost helps them rank will in search results. But this boost is only temporary. After some time, such sites or pages drop in search results or completely vanish.
Your hosting provider shutting down is a great start, trust me, been their, done that! Change your site content (titles, metas, content, cms, etc) constantly or make major changes frequently will definatly put your sites on the back burner with the SE's. I've also found that certain "questionable" affiliate ads can make a dramatic difference. And, most of all, sometimes, you need to do nothing! The algos change, anything can happen!!! Just try to keep your site "tight" and good luck in ranking! Deal with the problem if/when it arrives...

Most of the above answers are based on myths. Do some research and try and figure out where and why your SERP's have dropped. There can be dozens of reasons, PM me your URL and I can take a quick look for anything obvious.
one of my website was down for 3 weeks, there were serp rankings down for the website, After i renew the domain it comes back on 1st pos. and 1page for which my website ranked for. And till now i dont have faced banning problem google side, so i would not like to give you answer here. Because one can give exact answer from his own experience.
If you are banned, then none of your pages will be in the index. In extreme penalties, your rankings will drop to 900-1000 range. Do a search for "www.yourdomainnamehere.com" and if it is not ranked at or very close to the top, you may have been penalized.
