as far as i know, its use for targeted ads on your sites, log in to your adsense account go through the referral ads, and check the sections which applies to your websites, say you have a blog with a niche like photos and videos, now what you can do is check the referral ad see the click conversion and revenue ratings in photos and videos, find the highest conversion and the highest rating and choose the product and secondly know your traffic and according to that add the more lang say you are from UK, so default will be UK english, now you can add more lang like US,CANADA,INDIA, depending from where your webtraffic is coming, so that the ads shows up according to that. find out your web traffic, web host log file, and apply according to your traffic
go to referral section , search referral according to niche , in front of that product you u will see how they work . Most of them are cpa (cost per action - when someone download their trial product from your link u get paid ) and i have seen few cpc[ when someone click on you add] .
