You might want to focus on the current debate. If you can pull up a gig favoring a single candidate, say Hilary for Prez, and start up a WP powered blog and submit it to technorati, I am sure you will get noticed instantly.
I wouldn't bad mouth the pres on that site though...the secret service would be all over you in a heartbeat...whatever you do, try to stay neutral or positive.
Do what you want with it, don't worry about upsetting anybody from the U.S goverment. If they was going to arrest anybody for bad mouthing the goverment I would have been in prison a long time ago. I also have a polical url http://www.presidential-election-08.com/ I set up about a month ago targeting news on election candidates and serving adsense ads.
It's not a .gov name is it... Whatever you do, keep in mind that politics can be dirty, so if that's what makes you feel good about a website, you can easily turn it into political debates but then be prepared to dedicate time to maintaining the site in good shape. Otherwise you'll get nowhere shortly after launching the site.
That is absurd. You can bad mouth anyone you want, even the President and the Secret Service will not bother with you. However, threatening the President will result in a visit from the SS.

Make controversial claims, and post alot of convoluted reasoning to back them up. Call the winner really early.
