Houston Mexicans Planning a Day of Shut Down

So there's apparently some rumblings here in good ol Houston, Texas that the Mexican community, in protest of the current rounds of Homeland Security crackdowns on companies that knowingly hire illegal immigrants, will be staging a shutdown protest where they refuse to come to work, and Mexican own business will close down for the day. The object is to show Whitey that Mexican illegals contribute to their community.

    What do you think?

My personal opinion, and this is coming from a guy who actually has no real problems with illegal immigration from Mexico, that this will backfire when the shutdown a) Doesn't work, b) Gets a lot of people fired, and c) Mexican restaurants lose businesses to all those meal wagons that cover Houston from end to end.

If they do this, it'll be a disaster. One Mexican activist said it correctly about this on the news: "This is just stupid."

    Yup.

Yes, I too think this will backfire. What amazes me is that many legal immigrants from Mexico and other countries haven't stood up and denounced the illegals who are participating in this. If I was a legal immigrant and I waited the time period and went through all the hoops to be a citizen, I would be the last person who wanted illegals to be granted amnesty.

this may be the only way for people to realize that 5-10% of the US population are imigrants, legal of not.

Do you have any idea how long this process is, and the fact that it is almost impossible if you are from mexico? My wife is from mexico and I have been through the process, it is anything but a fair experience.

they would? they could is probably more accurate, but even then..if you went thru the channels legally and took all the time, I doubt your going to tell your family to jump the fence and do it illegally.

What does that mean? Why would it be acceptable for anyone to do something illegal? Shouldn't he be encouraging his family to be respectable legal entities?

This action proves the new Bush immigration plan will fail. It would be cheaper to just pay americans fair wages. Instead, the corps still get low wage workers and we citizens get the bills for the political snafu that is occuring. The low wage illegals with work permits will cost society money and save money for the corps as they play politics. All at the expense of american tax payers and the loss of american working opportunities.

Welcome to the united corporations of america.

You are really forgeting how terrible life in latin american countries can be for many. How does 46% unemployment and $5/day if you do find a job sound? It is human nature to do whatever you can to provide for you family and give them a safe environment.

There are many things that aren't "fair". I don't think the tax code is fair. Fair is in the eye of the beholder. There are no doubt problems with our immigration policies. Nevertheless, lawbreakers should not be tolerated.

Think about that next time you want to get your fat a55 a cheeseburger and the resturant closed because you wanted 11+ million hard workers deported. ;) Seriously, next time you go anywhere to eat, take a look in the kitchen of the resturant, you will be suprides at what you see.

this won't do them any good. If they strike, others will stop supporting them

just look at New York's MTA strike? Did it beneift any MTA worker? no....
all they gain is negative image...

a strike is the last things they should 've think about

Probably because providing safety and care for your family is more important (to most normal people) than any countries laws. BTW, there isn't any "fence" to jump

Heh heh there might be soon. Those Minute Man guys are going around getting private ranchers/land owners to agree to let them put up a fence on their property that will cover the border. They're telling Dubya he best do it or they will. Get ready for some fireworks! (Er, I mean, more fireworks!)

The whole problem is america is full of lazy, self-centered, selfish people. They care about nothing but themselves.

The hardships that Mexicans face here are horrible, I sometimes can't imagine it being worse in Mexico... I've seen them standing out in the sun at a gas station all day waiting for work, when it's 120 degrees and there's no shade. And I know even when they do find work they are paid so little.. really puts things into perspective and lets you know just how lucky you are.

Surely you're not suggesting that we should let anyone who wishes to just come into our county, no questions asked? Of course we're lucky, and yes, we're lazy and all that other stuff too. But are the people who break our laws because they think they deserve to not selfish?

None of that has anything to do with the fact that they're Mexican.

It has to do with the fact that they are...

    A) Here illegaly
    B) Unskilled
    C) No hablas Ingles!

Just maybe it's the Mexicans who are lazy and selfish! Maybe if they stayed in Mexico and improved conditions there, they wouldn't have to work here! Mexico's economy is worse than Chile's. It's just sad. It should be better than any other country south of the USA. They have lots of oil, silver, and manpower.

P.S. Why is everyone anti-enforcement? These people are felons. In order to work in the USA, they have to forge a Social Security Card.

    AND WHY THE DOUBLE STANDARD?!

Mexicans imprison illegal immigrants for 3-5 years! They imprison protesters for LIFE! Maybe Mexicans should have the guts to protest their own country!
