Look at it this way, you got their attention at least - I mean, all they've done is comment it out, but still, mightabin good Cheers, JL
If it was me I wouldnt have told anyone about it, so what if they were draining your bandwidth? I hear bandwidth is cheap these days. Me, personally would have used the hotlinked image for my own gain
It wasn't really a highly trafficed page honestly. Their main Yahoo Music page where this first occurred was though, and after changing that image to show a URL to one of my websites was put up, I got about 34K hits over the normal average, in about 36 hours. But, being a highly visible page, it didn't take long for them to notice that one. I have to admit, my sole intention here was to expose their tacky tactics of hotlinking off the backbones of webmasters and give them a little egg in the face per se - which, with the help of DP, Digg, WPW, and many others, I think I've accomplished that. Yahoo investors can apparently rest assured that Yahoo is doing all they can to keep cost down though - off the bandwidths of others ....
That's a hilarious thread Mike - thanks for sharing! Yes, they're special no doubt - they should have their own telethon!
I've had a couple of pages hot-linked on eBay auctions - your friend in this situation is mod_rewrite to key off of the referrer. I've had some fun with this, but I'm a family man, so nothing like goatse. BTW, Anil Dash got a picture of him with a Goatse T-shirt printed in the NY Times - now THAT was funny! ;-)
Alek - not to hijack my own thread, but does Pack 371 have a website? If so, feel free to send me the details and I'll place a link over at vinegrovescouts.com - a site I've been trying to do in my sparetime for local scouting organizations.
Pack 371 very recently got a YahooGroup up, but no real web presence ... although the Longs Peak Council is the parent organization and has some useful stuff on it. Back to having fun with hot-linking images - I thought what you did was great BTW. alek
lol - no, I just play one on the Internet Although I don't try to push my philosophies, religion et al on others, I do readily promote trying to find the lighter, brighter things in life .... to do so more effectively, may I interject one of my fave Monty Python songs: Bright Side of Life by Eric Idle Cheer up, Brian. You know what they say; Some things in life are bad, They can really make you mad. Other things just make you swear and curse, When you're chewing on life's gristle, Don't grumble, give a whistle, And this'll help things turn out for the best, hey, Always look on the bright side of life, Always look on the light side of life, If life seems jolly rotten, There's something you've forgotten, And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing. When you're feeling in the dumps, Don't be silly chumps, Just purse you're lips and whistle, That's the thing. And, always look on the bright side of life, Always look on the right side of life, For life is quite absurd, An. death's the final word, You must always face the curtain with a bow, Forget about your sin, give the audience a grin, Enjoy it, it's you last chance of the hour. So, always look on the bright side of death, Just before you draw your terminal breath, Life's a piece o' shit, When you look at it, Life's a laugh and death's a joke it's true, You'll see it's all a show, Keep 'em laughing as you go, Remember that the last laugh is on you. And, always look on the bright side of life, Always look on the right side of life, Come on, Brian cheer up, Always look on the bright side of life, Always look on the right side of life, Worse things happen at sea, you know, Always look on the bright side of life, I mean, what do you have to lose? You come from nothing, You go back to nothing. What have you lost? Nothing! Always look on the bright side of life.
