I think they can benefit / encourage ppl everyday. That's the reason of having the site to begin with. Second off, we gotta make money to justify the site maintenance. If you were me, how much would you expect we'll be making from the site - and how long?
Nice site! Don't really know how the potato angle fits in, but I guess it's memorable and friendly that way. I find it a bit slow loading though. Also nice would be to have a short bio for each of the authors (extracted from wikipedia or such). As far as making money, well, amazon books would be the obvious. But you're already doing this. Perhaps you should randomize it a bit so that an advertisement shows up in between quotes. (where people's attention is). I don't think the friendfinder ad fits this site (I might be wrong), and because of the animation in that ad I tend to ignore the entire left column. I would also put a little more emphasis on the email newsletter and RSS.
The site looks professional in design ,color schemes and it was easy to navigate.But it was bit slow in loading completely..
