I'm not sure if i am posting in the right place, sorry if i am not...

I just have a quick question:

What is the advantage of hosting a website yourself from home instead of hosting your site with a hosting company?

    Thanks in advance

If you host it at home , you have control over downtime.
You have full root and can do anything.

If you host it yourself there is the advantage that you can physically control all aspects of the server and you will therefore have full “root” access.

Also if you are already paying for an internet connection to your house or business that is capable of running a webs ever with the amount of traffic, what is the point in paying someone else to do it.

But if you just have a broadband connection and your not that sure about server setup and security its a lot less hassle and safer to allow someone else to do it for you.

I would recommend sticking with a reputable hosting company.

If you want to host it at home, you have to keep in mind that you will need a great board band connection in order to maintain a fast load speed on your websites.

Answer is simple: If you host the website in your home computer, you will lack high-speed internet (in most of the cases) and you need to keep the system online the whole time which consumes a lot of electricity and bandwidth. You could save money if you host the website in a hosting company and it will increase your website performance as well.

That depends on the location where you are living. However, if you host more than 3-4 servers and keep it online 24X7X365, it will cost you 3-4 times the expense than you need to pay for the server company.

I'd say the best thing you get from it is experience. You can say "Dedicated server? OK, I've done that. I can do it, no problem" when you're done, because you'll have learned the hard way how to do things.

    i don't think he's looking for recommendations.

    oo7ml,

Definetly stick with a provider vs. trying to do it on your own, especially if it's a business oriented site or is an income provider. Hope this helps.

you could try with WAMP or something before you buy hosting, and see if it works for your needs
