Hosting Your Own Site

Okay so this is a something that I've been thinking about lately. I'm getting ready to take off with a new website. Is there a website that describes how to setup a domain on your own server? I like the idea of not paying someone else for space to host my website. I'd like to do it, but I have no idea how.

Do you have a dedicated server box and a suitable connection to run a host? I really doubt that.

I have a 1TB box sitting to the side, and a download speed of just shy of 5Mbps and an upload speed of 1.5Mbps. That to me seems plenty to run my own site. What do you think?

If you are going to host your web site in your home computer, it will cost you more. Now a day, you get good hosting plan and web hosting company at few bucks only.

Also, before you use your system to host your web site, make sure your ISP's allows to use their connection for this purpose. Many ISPs' don't allow this.

as kailash mentions, you have to check if ur ISP allows running a home server. most ISP's block incoming port 80 and 25. which technically makes u run ur website in non-standard ports. even otherwise, the costs of running a machine 24x7 and the underlying maintainence has to be considered.

BTW I do run a home server to host my local svn and an amateur radio, on a stupid ISP which doesnt like this in their TOS, inspite of having 3-4 real webservers at my disposal, so have fun on that.. mission critical websites are better taken care by a paid host / server in my view ;)

If you dont even know how to set it up, do you know how to maintain the security of it?
Also, i second the idea of checking with your ISP about running a server.
