I have been with websites and hosting for well over a year now but i am not sure how upgrading to a better hosting package/dedicated server works. Not that i'm planning on uppgrading or anything, i just want to know the facts incase i''ll need to, in general terms, how long does it take for the upgrade to complete? is the time frame same if you are just moving to a better hosting package and moving to a dedicated server? or does it differ?

will i have to upload my files again and recreate the databases or will that be done automatically? and again explain for upgrade to better hosting package and server.

I use godaddy by the way.

Depend. If you are on a cpanel server, the other web hosts can help migrate your site free of charge.

It totally depends to which plan you are upgrading. If you are upagrding your shared hosting plan, probably you will need to upload the site again. They will just change the resource of your account. But if you are upgrading to a dedicated server then you will need to transfer all your contents including databases. Some of the control panel provides the feature to transfer site from one server to another server.

If you are upgrading from a shared account to a larger shared account with the same company, your company should be able to simply upgrade your package to a larger size. This will however depend on how the company operates.

Shared to dedicated, you will have to transfer files, obviously. You need to backup your databases, website, email, etc and transfer it to the new server and then finally restore it.

As Mxhub mentioned, moving from a shared cPanel account to another shared cPanel account or a dedicated cPanel server, the transfer is greatly simplified as there is a tool which makes it as easy as clicking a button.
