What is the best way to host several domains/sites? or would it be best to just choose a hosting company and take out several $3/month plans for example.

You can host several domains on a single plan. It depends on whether your host allows addon domains or not.

personally, i like to spread my sites around a little bit.
2 or 3 on this host, 2 or 3 on that one etc.

so, if my host "goes down" at least all my sites don't at the same time, plus there "may" be some S E O benefits to using multiple hosts.

    IMHO. :)

vT16 can help you out here Ryan ;)

We allow unlimited addon domains on all our shared plans! Which allow you to host as many sites as you can think of, as long as you don't exceed your Space and Bandwidth limitation ;)

Take a look at our plans at http://vt16.com/hosting/

    Thanks,
    Freddy

You can host several sites under a shared hosting plan using addon domains function or you can also consider a reseller hosting plan.

    There are two options really:

    shared hosting with addon domains
This option is ideal for most situations. Most hosts these days offer unlimited addon domains so it's just a matter of having a few accounts so you don't stuff everything on one account then have issues and have all your sites down

    reseller hosting:
Reseller accounts allow you to make cPanel accounts which may be more ideal in some situations. It adds a layer of security to your accounts since one site no longer can affect any others. Same deal as shared hosting if you're hosting a lot of sites it's always best to spread it around with a few accounts so not everything is down at once.

Yeah, cheap can also be expensive when the site you invested on is down for ages and you do not get support.
