currently i live in china, therefore there are some sites that the chinese government just bans. A good example of these are sites that have sex related content. If i go there i see the pr sign on my google toolbar, however i cant go to the actual site. The chinese gov, and numerous other govs block entire IPs instead of simply a site addy. so even if your site doesnt really have any content that the chinese gov will block, another site thats listed on the same IP could. If it does then your site could be blocked quite easily. Stats: theres 100 million people online in china, and thats growing (by large numbers) every year. Undoubtedly in the next 10 years china's online population will be drastically larger then america. so think twice before you purchase super cheap hosting someplace. for discussion purposes, discussing censoriship espec within china, and in other countries would be a good thing
Na, i live in NY...and there is no censorship in HK..i mean there are local chinese site that has porn in it..let me look for the URL
That is why many many chinese users, use proxies such as www.proxymy.com and www.proxy.org to get around these bans. In fact, you could purchase a server in the US and run one of these proxies yourself if it was worth it to you.
unfortunatly most people surfing in china dont know about proxies (though i do of course), so they dont partake of them. Like 98% of people here probly don't use them, just as 15% of people use 800x600.
This sounds like just another reason why one should make sure to have dedicated IP addresses for their sites.
well.. don't underestimate them. I have know a few who read and memorize a whole dictionary but can't listen or speak at all, those ppl has no life...
also if im not mistaken it would be hard to market proxies to mainland chinese, as proxy related sites are also being blocked no? as well as any site detailing ways for chinese citezins to bypass the governemnt controlled filter.
Now there would be ways around it for a new proxy site, but in order to fool the filtering system will just make it insanely hard for chinese people to learn of it, and online word of mouth may be just as unsuccessful. But man imagine the kind of money you could make from a proxy site if oyu could deliver to the chinese people.
there are plentiful proxy sites available in china, i generally use www.anonymouse.org thats just cuz my friend told me about it.
The Chinese are resourceful people so you really don't need to worry too much about them, if they want something, they will find some ways to get that. They are good at improvising.
yup if they want it they can get it, because of the way education works around here, few people want to get around the filters. the main point is that there are a lot of people that cant access your site from within china. for instance shanghai has around 200,000 foreigners working, all who cant see your sites. Working class foreigners are very likely to be using the internet. If you add in tourists, wives, children etc. your looking at around 500,000 foreigners in shanghai alone.
