Any basic hosting will serve, even free ones.
if you want a quality directory i recommend using dedicated IP

Unlike forums and huge content sites, directories are not heavy on resources.

    asmallorange.com would be good.

I think using a dedicated IP for a directory is overkill.
Any non-crappy shared hosting should be good enough.
I hear hostgator and site5 are good. pricewise, resellerzoom is unbeatable, but sometimes their shared servers get overloaded.

Site5 sucks really... Go for Hostgator instead. It's $9.95 / mo, but you'll make that up easily by selling a few links.

You can get coupons and read real hostgator reviews left by many DP users here : HostGator Reviews and Coupons

If you go for premium directory I think dedicated IP it’s really necessary
I am paying an extra $2 a month for a private Ip but I think the customers will appreciate it.

As long as not free hosting, you can get a basic package with Cpanel, 700MB Space, 3,500MB Transfer for only $1 at bbdimension.com

I believe it's good for starting out.

However if you are planning for big success, go for 110GB Space and 1,100 GB Bandwith at www.servage.net, $7.50 monthly
